FAQs
Discover answers to frequently asked questions about photo editing, presets, and software functionality.
What's the difference between Lightroom Classic and Lightroom (cloud-based)?
Lightroom Classic is a desktop-focused application that stores your photos locally on your computer. It’s ideal for photographers with large libraries and complex workflows. Lightroom (cloud-based) is designed for a seamless, cross-device experience, storing your photos in the cloud and allowing you to edit them on your computer, mobile devices, and the web. While both offer powerful editing tools, their storage and workflow approaches differ.
What are the best settings to adjust for improving skin tones in portraits?
For improving skin tones, focus on the ‘Color’ panel. Adjust ‘Temperature’ and ‘Tint’ to balance any color casts. Use ‘Hue,’ ‘Saturation,’ and ‘Luminance’ sliders for the orange and yellow channels to fine-tune skin color. Be careful not to over-saturate. Also, the masking tools can be used to select just the skin, so that changes only affect the skin.
How do I install and use presets in Lightroom?
In Lightroom Classic, you can import presets through the Develop module’s Presets panel. In Lightroom (cloud-based), you can import presets through the Presets panel in the Edit view. Once imported, presets appear in the Presets panel, and you can apply them with a single click. You can also save your own custom presets.
How do I fix common photo problems like overexposure or color casts?
To fix overexposure, decrease the ‘Exposure’ and ‘Highlights’ sliders. For underexposure, increase ‘Exposure’ and ‘Shadows.’ To correct color casts, use the ‘White Balance’ sliders (Temperature and Tint) to neutralize unwanted colors. You can also use the masking tools to only affect certain areas.
Can I revert to my original photo after applying edits in Lightroom?
Yes! Lightroom uses non-destructive editing, meaning it doesn’t alter your original image files. Instead, it stores editing instructions in its catalog. You can always revert to the original photo by resetting the edits or viewing the photo’s history.
Are Lightroom presets compatible across desktop and mobile versions?
Yes, Lightroom (cloud-based) presets are designed to sync across all your devices. When you save or import a preset, it becomes available on your desktop, mobile, and web versions of Lightroom. However, Lightroom Classic presets might require some adjustments for mobile use.
